As of 2 July 2018, the ILC’s Allied Health Service funded by the WA HACC (Home and Community Care) Program will transition across to the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) for people aged 65 and over and 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme provides entry-level support at home and in the community. The ILC Allied Health Service will continue to operate as it does currently during this transition.
What is the Commonwealth Home Support Programme?
Funded by the Australian Government, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme provides a range of entry-level aged care services for frail older people who need assistance to keep living independently at home and in their community.
If you are generally able to manage but just need some help with daily tasks to continue living at home, Commonwealth Home Support Programme services may be right for you. These services might also be suitable if you have had a setback and need support for just a short period of time to help you get back on your feet. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme funds a large variety of organisations (called service providers) across Australia to deliver the support and services to you.
The aim of the program is to help older people live as independently as possible — with a focus on working with you, rather than doing for you, building on your strengths and abilities to help you remain living independently and safely at home and increase your overall wellbeing.
Why are WA HACC services transitioning to the CHSP?
On 31 January 2017, the Commonwealth Government and WA Government agreed to transition responsibility for WA HACC services for those aged 65 years over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, to the Commonwealth.
The transition of these services is consistent with the arrangements that have been implemented throughout all other territories and states as part of the Commonwealth’s national aged care reform agenda. These changes mean that the services and support provided to people as they grow older is consistent nationally no matter where they live in Australia.
When will HACC transition to CHSP?
WA HACC services for older people will transition to the CHSP from 1 July 2018.
Can I remain with my existing service provider under CHSP?
Yes, you can. If your service provider is an existing HACC/CHSP provider and the service types remain suitable for you then your support services can remain under the CHSP.
Are there any changes I need to be aware of?
There are no significant changes to the support the Independent Living Centre WA (ILC) offers through our Allied Health Service and existing clients will continue to receive support as they currently do. The service will continue to assist people aged 65 years and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over. The client contribution to the cost of the Allied Health Service at the ILC for CHSP clients will also remain the same.
How do I access the Commonwealth Home Support program?
My Aged Care has a website (www.myagedcare.gov.au) and contact centre to give you information about aged care and to help you access the services that are right for you. My Aged Care staff will ask you questions about your current needs and circumstances so they can determine your eligibility for assessment and refer you to appropriate aged care assessment services.
