Time flies when you’re having fun. Time also flies when you’re setting up a new Centre. Can you believe it has already been one year since the Independent Living Centre WA opened a new Centre in Cockburn?
Set up like an apartment so people can see, trial and experience assistive equipment, technology and changes to the home in a replica living environment, the Centre has proved to be a popular place to visit.
One feature that has been of interest to many visitors is the smart home technology aspects, which demonstrate an alternative way to control appliances and services in the home. For example, you can switch the lights on simply by walking into a room, change the TV channel with a smart phone, control the blinds via a tablet and see who is at your doorstep and be able to let visitors in with the touch of a button from any room in your home.
ILC Cockburn Coordinator Anelle Young said the Centre has attracted a range of people.
“We’ve seen older people, family members and people with a disability who are interested in looking at equipment and technology for themselves or family members. We’ve also had many service and therapy providers, support workers, health professionals and even builders and architects through the doors.
“In addition, our Community Allied Health Services Coordinator, Alison Senior, regularly uses the Centre to meet with WA NDIS coordinators and participants to address NDIS specific queries related to allied health assessments and assistive equipment and technology in people’s plans,” said Anelle.
And when asked what her favourite equipment item at the Centre is, Anelle was quick to point out the Ucello Kettle “without a doubt”. “As a student we had to make our own and the design was not nearly as stylish as the Ucello,” said Anelle.
At ILC Cockburn people can obtain expert, unbiased information and advice from an occupational therapist about equipment and technology options for them. People can visit the Centre between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. To find out more about the Centre visit our website or call 1300 885 886.
