Collaboration between the Independent Living Centre WA (ILC), TL Engineering and Vanquip Mobilities gives drivers with disability an opportunity to view and trial products that assist with driving and can help them transfer safely into and out of their car.
Generously built and with equipment supplied by TL Engineering and Vanquip Mobilities, the new transport module is a great addition to the ILC display floor and allows people with common issues such as loss of function in arms or legs, difficulty lifting their legs into the car and standing up from the car seat and turning on the seat to explore a variety of driving and transfer aids.
These include a range of spinner knobs, hand controls, portable handles, swivel cushions, sliding mats, leg lifters, an electrically operated turning seat, transfer slide boards, ramps and vehicle mounted hoists.
The new transport module demonstrates a number of options including hoists, lifts and ramps suitable for lifting and transporting both the user and their wheelchair together, as well as lifting the wheelchair and scooter separate from the user.
Consumer feedback has been positive with many people saying it is very helpful to actually see how a product could work for them and discuss options with an occupational therapist experienced in supporting people with a range of abilities to drive safely.
The ILC provides a free and impartial information and advisory service to help you choose the right equipment and technology to support independence. If you wish to speak with an occupational therapist about your individual requirements, which may include vehicle modifications, or book an appointment to come and see us, please call 1300 885 886.
If you would like information around how to transfer safely to the car you can read our information sheet here.
