The ‘Let’s Talk Culture’ seminar series aims to assist professionals to work in a culturally responsive way with consumers and carers from ethnically diverse backgrounds. These seminars are jointly organised by the Mental Health Commission, the Transcultural Mental Health Service at Royal Perth Hospital; and, the Cultural Diversity Unit of the Chronic Disease Prevention Directorate at the Department of Health.
The first of the 2014 seminar series will focus on ageing in a culture that may be unfamiliar or different from the culture of origin and will be opened by Timothy Marney, Mental Health Commissioner of Western Australia.
Amar Varsani, coordinator for the Independent Living Centre Multicultural Aged Care Service (ILC MACS) is proud to be one of the many guest speakers. She has a wealth of knowledge gained from her experience working with diverse cultures in health and education including with Ishar Multicultural Women’s Health Centre (as a volunteer), Carers’ Association of WA and WA Association for Mental Health.
Amar will be presenting on the perspectives and mental health issues of seniors from culturally diverse communities. She will also share information around what resources, training and supports are available to provide culturally appropriate care to the elderly.
This event is being held on Thursday 20th March 2014 between 9.30am and 12.30pm at the Theatrette, Department of Health, 189 Royal Street, East Perth. Registrations for this seminar close Monday 17th March 2014 please RSVP to Bernadette.Wright@health.wa.gov.au
