Changes underway for older drivers

Client being assessed by OT Driver AssessorHave you heard about the recent changes to Seniors driver testing? Mandatory annual practical driving assessments (PDA) for drivers 85 years and over are to be abolished in WA from 16 December 2013. Check out the media release below for more information.

Road Safety research supports that “older drivers do not pose an unacceptable risk on our roads,” and these changes bring WA in line with most other states approach to Senior drivers. Check out the Department of Transport website for more details.

At the ILC we have also found that age does not necessarily impair driving performance, however the impact of the ageing process, medical conditions and medication use does requires careful assessment and consideration.

We provide an Occupational Therapy (OT) Driver Assessment for anyone who needs them. Our assessments are provided in a supportive environment and aim to ensure people are safe and able to drive, where possible. Find out more about ILC’s OT Driver Assessment :

  1. To add to the growing debate about older drivers, Radio National ran a background briefing programme entitled “At the end of the road”. Have a look or listen for a national perspective
